If you have more than one dog, how do you balance giving them attention?
My Beagle Sadie is 1.5 and I have had her since she was a puppy. Since then, we fostered a black lab for 4 months, my husband adopted his friend's unwanted terrier, and recently I decided to keep a Rottweiler that we had fostered for a couple weeks (China).
The problem is that Sadie gets really jealous because China is always protective of me and will sleep right by me. Sadie has taken to sleeping in another room and ignoring me if I call her and just generally being destructive. So I started paying more attention to her by taking her for car-rides with me, and trying to play with her as I realized that I hadn't played with her in awhile. So last night, I played fetch with her and made China lay by my husband, and she has come to snuggle by me now and Sadie & I are friends again.
However, last night, China peed in my house twice which she never does and now she seems upset.
How do I win? I love both my dogs but this is crazy!
I've read before that dogs have a sense of "fairness," and if one feels that it is being treated unfairly, it will react to the situation. I try to give my dogs equal attention. When I greet one, I greet the other at that time. When I give one a treat, I give the other a treat. It seems to work out for me as long as I try to preserve this sort of balance. Additionally if one is being punished over the other, I deliberately praise the 'good' dog in front of the 'bad' dog to emphasize the point. Good luck!
